Frequently Asked Questions
General Questions
What is the Tabcat V2, and how does it work?
The Tabcat V2 is an RF (radio frequency) homing device, not a GPS tracker. It consists of a handheld receiver and small, lightweight tags that attach to your cat’s collar. When you press a button on the handset, it sends a signal to the tag. The tag responds, and the handset uses a series of lights (red, amber, green) and an audible beep that speeds up as you get closer, guiding you to your cat’s exact location within a range of up to 150m (500ft) in open air. It doesn’t require a phone, app, or any monthly subscription
What's the difference between the original Tabcat and the Tabcat V2?
The Tabcat V2 is the newer model, featuring a smaller and lighter tag. Both versions function similarly, but they are not cross-compatible. V1 tags and handsets only work with other V1 components, and V2 tags and handsets only work with other V2 components
Can the Tabcat V2 be used for other animals?
While designed with cats in mind, the Tabcat V2 can be used to track any small pet, such as small dogs, rabbits, or ferrets, provided the lightweight tag can be securely attached to their collar.
Getting Started
How do I set up my new Tabcat V2 for the first time?
Setup is quick and straightforward. Simply unpack the device, read the instruction manual, and install the batteries. To register a tag, remove the battery pull tab, hold it near the handset, and press and hold the desired button (e.g., Button 1) for three seconds until you hear a beep. Repeat for each tag.
How do I attach the tag to my cat's collar?
First, place the tag inside the provided silicone protective case. Then, thread your cat’s collar through both slits on the back of the case. The protective case is essential for protecting the tag from water, scratches, and impacts, and it helps maintain your warranty
What is the best way to train my cat to respond to the Tabcat V2's beep?
Use positive reinforcement. Each button produces a distinct beep. For a week or two, give your cat a treat every time you locate them using the device when they’re inside the house. They will quickly learn to associate the beep with a reward and may even come home on their own when they hear it

Battery & Maintenance
How long does the battery last in the tags and handset?
The batteries in the homing tags are designed to last a very long time, typically between 3 and 12 months, depending on usage. The handset uses standard AAA batteries, which will need to be replaced more frequently
What type of battery does the Tabcat tag use?
The Tabcat V2 homing tag uses a single CR2032 coin cell battery. This is a common battery that is available on our products page
My handset lights are faint or it's not powering on. What should I do?
This is typically a sign that the handset’s batteries need to be replaced. First, try installing fresh AAA batteries. If the problem persists, also try replacing the CR2032 battery in the homing tag itself
Troubleshooting & Other Questions
My tag won't pair with the handset. How can I fix this?
This is often a simple issue. Ensure the battery pull tab has been completely removed and that the battery is correctly installed with the ‘+’ side facing up. If the problem continues, try reinstalling the battery
Will the Tabcat V2 interfere with my cat's microchip or microchip-activated cat flap?
No. The Tabcat V2’s signal operates on a different frequency and will not interfere with pet microchips or microchip-activated cat flaps
Can I buy extra tags for my existing Tabcat V2 handset?
Yes, you can purchase additional V2 homing tags, which are located on our products page. Each handset can support up to four tags in total
Are tags from other users' Tabcat systems compatible with my handset?
